Two new stations deployed in NE Greenland

In June 2026, two new seismic stations were deployed near Zackenberg Research Station in North-East Greenland in a combined effort between GRuMPS, the Greenland Ecosystem Monitoring Program (GEM), and Daniel Binder from the University of Potsdam.

Kirsty Langley and colleagues placed stations close to the Zackenberg River, which has a long timeseries of discharge measured at a hydrological gauging station maintained by the GEM monitoring program.

One of the new passive seismic stations deployed is a traditional GRuMPS designed station (photo below). The other is a repurposed station that was previously located on the AP Olsen Glacier. The AP Olsen Glacier lies within the Zackenberg River catchment and has been the source of almost annual glacial lake outburst floods (see our recent article on these flood events). The traditional hydrological discharge monitoring is carried out at the bridge crossing the river.

The new passive seismic stations were placed with one on each side of the river. We just cross our fingers that the local wildlife do not find them so interesting, as the Musk Ox have previously used solar panels from other instrument sites in this area as battering rams.
